  • Valerian: This herbal remedy helps with insomnia, which is a common symptom of anxiety.
    • Take about 1 hour before bedtime, and only when you are certain you can get at least 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
    • It is available in liquid form, but due to its rather unpleasant smell most people prefer the capsule form:
      • Dosages come in 300 mg and 900 mg strengths.
      • Start with lowest dosage and watch for side effects: headaches, excitability, dry mouth, and upset stomach.
      • If no symptoms appear, dosage can be increased. Caution: the maximum daily dosage is 1,800 mg/day.
      • This herbal treatment will take about 2-3 weeks to work and it should only be taken for a maximum of 3 months at a time.
      • DO NOT take with other sedative medications that affect the central nervous system such as medical sedatives, antihistamines, alcohol.
      • DO NOT take if you have liver disease.
  • Kava: This herbal treatment has an anti-anxiety effect to help the person relax. However, the FDA has released a statement that there are potential risks for severe liver damage.
    • If you elect to take Kava, the recommended dosage is 100 mg to 200 mg, depending on your age and general health.
    • You should only take if for a few days at a time.
    • DO NOT take this if you are pregnant or you have liver disease.
  • Lemon Balm:  This herb is a part of the mint family and it has been found to help with mood, mental clarity, reduced stress, better digestion, and better sleep.
    • The recommended daily dose is 600 mg
    • Lemon balm can be combined with Valerian.
  • Chamomile: This herb is a natural sedative that calms nervousness, reduces headaches and helps with indigestion.
    • Intended as a short term treatment.
    • There is no specific dosage established. Most people drink chamomile teas as much as 3 or 4 times day with no side effects.
  • Hops: Most of us associate hops with beer, but it is also an effective herb that fights insomnia, stress, headaches and nervousness.
    • Although there is no established dosage, one can combine 300-400 mg of hops with 240-300 mg of valerian 1 hour before bed.
    • DO NOT take this with other sedatives that affect the central nervous system.
    • Caution:  If you suffer from depression, hops may actually increase your depression symptoms.
  • Motherwort: Pregnant women use this herb for anxiety to manage stress and tension.
    • It is NOT recommended that pregnant women use this during the first two trimesters.
    • A tincture using 10-20 drops at a time may help alleviate stress. It can be taken several times a day if needed, but usually after a few times, you may find that you need it less and less.
  • St John’s Wort:  This herb is effective in fighting anxiety and acts as a mood lifter.
    • Taken in extract form:  Initially the dose is 300 mg, 3 times per day.
    • Once symptoms of anxiety are reduced, you can go to a maintenance dose of 300mg-600mg once a day.
